Liberty is at risk

Liberty is at risk

What is liberty? The condition of a free person; absence of restraint; permission to do and say.

If we do not have the liberty to tell people, especially elected representatives, what they do not want to hear, do we have liberty?

If we are policed for standing up for something power doesn’t like, do we have liberty?

If we cannot protest peacefully, are we free?

In these times, liberty is at risk. Even in my country, people are being prosecuted in some way, from losing their jobs to being arrested, for speaking up against horror and genocide.

It might seem somewhat innocuous. But it is not. When we cannot speak freely in a democratic society about things that go against the government consensus, when our words are in peaceful yet clear protest, and we are punished for them, liberty is lost.

One Little Atrocity at a time.

Which makes these times extremely dangerous.

This means that our voices are ever more urgent now.

This is not the time for silence.

July 2nd 2025 A letter to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Australia A letter to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Australia Dear Ms Wong, My impression of you is that you are a decent and good person. Yet I wonder why you and the Prime Minister are so profoundly silent on the atrocities in Gaza? I wonder if you are captured by the Israeli lobby? Or so caught under the hegemony of the USA? It simply doesn’t make sense that the Labour government is so complicit in what most experts in...

July 1st 2025 How shocking How shocking I love the grassroots movements of art, music and culture. Festivals have shocked the world. Woodstock is an example of counterculture for the boomer generation. The same generation reluctant to give up their entitlements to enable our youth a better future in 2025. Over this past weekend, we had Glastonbury in the UK. Claiming people are dangerous terrorists because they speak up against genocide is business as usual in many parts of the world,...

June 30th 2025 Empires fall Empires fall It is the law of gravity. What goes up comes down. In these last desperate days for the US Empire, all the patterns of demise are there. Greedy, vainglorious rulers who spit on the ‘common’ people. Capture by big money blinded by their historical black gold rise to wealth, dinosaurs in lag. Holding countries hostage, bullying the tactic of choice. Increasing disparity between the haves and have-nots. Desperate acts of violence to sway rogue countries...
