Care of each other is on us

As I was driving home from the beach this morning, I was thinking about people like us.

This morning Meta decided to pay and pretend to fix some of its harms to children. In Australia, the data centre build-outs appear to be winning. Energy and water. Who cares? Let the gods of tech win.

And the US government has deemed the Palestine Action Group a terrorist organisation. Hello Nelson Mandela, you know about this type of designation.

While the innocent villages in Tibet and Nepal get wiped off the map by climate change they had nothing to do with.

As I read Karen Hao’s book, The Empire of AI: Inside the reckless race for total domination, it becomes evident that the leaders of the world are all horrid, lacking any wisdom, white man boys.

They do not care. Not one iota.

They do not care.

Care is on us. Humanity is on us. Kindness is on us. So is paying tax. On us.

What I do know, with a certainty I am confident about, is these men are not happy, know no peace. The lost boys. I can find some compassion, but it does require deep digging.

The author Richard Flanagan delivered a speech at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas in Sydney, Australia, this week against the ridiculous capture of our government by the Israeli lobby. It is worth watching. You can read the full speech here.

I wonder, thinking about children born so innocent, how we become such monsters.

I take a deep breath, square my shoulders, and return to the fray. I am grateful for those who stay out on the edge, speaking, protesting, writing. There will never be peace. And there will be collapse. The story will begin again.

The winter sun warms my skin, and for that, I am grateful.
