Dolly has left us

Dolly has left us

She was one of the few people who managed to be universally loved.

I think about this. For some, to be universally loved is an aspiration.

And I wonder, is it the way, in a world that kills the ‘other’ with such ferocity?

We need people like Dolly. She knew she played a public role. That role was not who she was. She played the blonde, yet she was never the stereotype. She could walk out of the negotiation room a winner before the other person even realised she scored. Her whip-smart wore a wig and rhinestones.

And she never forgot her roots: deep poverty.

For many, we long to be universally loved, even as our path insists on speaking to the crimes and criminals, loud and clear.

Those of us who are destined to take a stand, fierce, knowing we will divide and be hated by many. We too have a role.

It demands that our purpose is far greater than our longing to be universally loved and accepted.

Rest in peace, Dolly. You brought so much happiness to everyone you touched, near and far. Your songs are printed across the stars, ready to bring us home from a dark night.

This morning Meta decided to pay and pretend to fix some of its harms to children. In Australia, the data centre build-outs appear to be winning. Energy and water. Who cares? Let the gods of tech win. And the US government has deemed the Palestine Action Group a terrorist organisation. Hello Nelson Mandela, you know about this type of...

August 25th 2026 The innocent pay The innocent pay The Israeli Defence Force cleared soldiers of criminal responsibility for the 2024 drone strike that killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers, including Australian citizen Zomi Frankcom. Hillel Newman, the Israeli ambassador to Australia, said about this finding: “One cannot attack the findings of a court if the findings are not suitable to one’s political agenda.” He said this not only with a straight face, but he also said it with...

Augsut 24th 2026 Privilege comes with responsibility Privilege comes with responsibility Not everyone gets to become an elite athlete. Like it or not, there is a certain set of genetic, inherited preconditions plus social factors that allow elite athletes to become the best. Height, body shape, muscle fibre twitch speed, early access as children to training and support, the right coaching, the right funding and sponsoring support to be able to focus on your sport. No one reaches the top...
