Framing and freedom

Framing and freedom

A frame is a structure that holds the parts together. It is an enclosing border.

To frame a story is to set a context that allows the story to exist within the frame or context.

When we seek to frame our lives, we might consider what structure is needed to allow the parts of us to hold together, to be in integrity.

The frame might include the daily habits that support us. The values we hold non-negotiable. The relationships that are primary. The priorities we set.

The morning routine. Sleep patterns. Ongoing education. The quality of our relationships. What matters most. What happens in an emergency. What happens when we have our backs against the wall?

When we frame a Syntropic enterprise, we would create a Trust Manifesto agreement. Embedded in this agreement are the non-negotiable Pattern Integrity elements, the values and qualities we hold as sacred. We cover power - who holds it, when does it change hands, what happens if it goes rogue. Conflict - how do we manage it, encourage healthy conflict, prevent it from going silent or violent, train people to be better at responding to conflict. Money - where we source it, how we use it, who is responsible, how do we make it clean and transparent, never hidden and corruptible. Purpose - what is our purpose, why does it matter, will it change and if so how? Trust - how do we know we have it, what do we do if we begin to lose it. Stewardship - where is it held, how do we develop it, how does stewardship change hands?

I love framing. A long time ago I learned that freedom is only achieved when we have its counterbalancing force, a strong frame and boundary. These two are complementary pairs.

Yet most people who long for freedom misunderstand, believing that freedom is the ability to do whatever you like, when you like. That is not freedom; it is anarchy.

October 6th 2026 The morality that says every life is sacred The morality that says every life is sacred The system is working as designed. Extract from the downtrodden, the lower ‘castes’, those with limited access to education, those who do not look like those in power, or pray to a similar god. Build the data centres in places already hollowed out by poverty. Places that have lived the neglect of society for decades. Out of sight, out of mind. Plunder from the earth, the enslaved, artists,...

October 5th 2026 Cry Terrorism Cry terrorism One of Aesop’s Fables, Cry Wolf, tells the story of a bored shepherd boy who, seeking some excitement, cries out that a wolf is attacking his sheep. The first time, the villagers rush to help him. And the second time. Maybe even the third time. But it was all a ploy. There was no wolf. One day, a wolf appears, and the boys’ cries fall on deaf ears. The wolf of 2026 is terrorism. And people – particularly politicians and those who seek to gain – are...

October 2nd 2026 Mapping where the power lies Mapping where the power lies A significant element of growing up, the end of which is our death, is to become more agentic, knowing what we can and do control, and what we cannot. Mapping who holds the power is a part of this. When we do this, the first map might reveal that we have given our power to another, or an institution, or a belief, often without consent or permission, or even awareness. Coercion, gaslighting, manipulation, spell casting...
