Mapping where the power lies

Mapping where the power lies

A significant element of growing up, the end of which is our death, is to become more agentic, knowing what we can and do control, and what we cannot.

Mapping who holds the power is a part of this.

When we do this, the first map might reveal that we have given our power to another, or an institution, or a belief, often without consent or permission, or even awareness.

Coercion, gaslighting, manipulation, spell casting and blackmail are all expressions of a power differential.

Grooming is a regularly deployed process. We are beginning to understand grooming by predators of young people.

But our media, our politicians and influencers all deploy some form of grooming. Some states have invested decades into grooming a global audience.

Mapping our power is a crucial first step in reclamation.

To be clear, I am not talking about dominating power. I am talking about our power of agency and choice, which can only be real when we have full awareness and knowledge symmetry.

Where, when and why do we give our power away?

To be liked? Accepted, Loved?

To be part of the in-group, to belong?

To be thought of as associated with another’s power and, as such, gain power?

Because an authority figure said so?

Because we never questioned the power?

Because we have made a mistake and are paying penance?

Knowing the terrain of power – who has it – is it legitimate – how real is the perceived power – why have I given my power to the other – why have I given my power to this story or belief – is an inquiry of growing up.

Worth doing regularly,

October 1st 2026 What is true? What is true Waking again to another news cycle spinning some form of terrorist attack. Last week it was bombs at an airfield in the UK. The perpetrators have been released on bail. The US President, with a track record of overtly interfering in another country’s sovereignty- an act that, for most of its existence, the USA did covertly- made it clear what he thought before any evidence had been gathered. This morning it is an attack by a pilot on a plane. Given...

September 30th 2026 Be your word, or don't speak Be your word, or don’t speak Several months ago, I met with a bright, ambitious young man. The conversation was energetic and engaging. Almost all of my meetings these days have one agenda: to open a conversation and explore mutual opportunities. The keys are “open” and “mutual”. The opportunities are not defined. They could be anything from finding a like-minded soul, to contributing to each other’s work, to learning, supporting and sharing....

September 29th 2026 Trial by citizen Trial by citizen When the courts or our institutions fail at justice, which they are doing with increasing frequency, it falls, as always, upon citizens to take the justice mantle. This is the story of Batman, and many of the other DC Justice League crew. But in the real world, it falls on regular humans without capes, masks or special powers. People like Toby Morton, former writer for the animated comedy South Park. His current project is TheCornell7.org,...
