When we offer support and are rejected

When we offer support and are rejected

You see someone struggling. You offer to help. They decline. You insist; they still decline your offer.

Common scenario.

What if the offer to help, support or assist is to a beloved?

And later, they blame you for their stressful life. Or add these struggling circumstances to their list of stresses, and blame you for all of them.

When we offer support or help, and we are rejected in our offer, then our offer is complete. We grant the other person the sovereignty of choice – to accept or reject the offer. Sovereignty of choice includes the responsibility that goes with it. To then accept blame for what happens next when your offer of support is rejected is to continue the entanglement, rather than to grant the other sovereignty of choice.

When we do this, we never allow for the development of personal responsibility of the choice maker. And we remain enmeshed in a co-dependent, unhealthy relationship.

It is a lose-lose game. No one grows up. The entanglement keeps all parties fractured.

Honour a person’s right to choose. Grant them the full right. You can repeat your offer of support should they wish to take it up at a future date. But the offer and rejection are a complete transaction. If they then project shame, guilt, blame, or anger on you, refuse to accept it.

They made the choice. They pay the price. This goes for children and adults.

Many times in my work as a coach, I make an offer to support. I might provide suggestions and guidance. If the offer is rejected, I grant the chooser full sovereignty. I am complete. I do not walk away and wash my hands. I hold the space, with love, for the choice maker. If the choice they made has heavy consequences, I do not need to say – I told you so. My work is not about being right. It is about providing the space, platform and tools for evolutionary development. Instead, we explore the lessons together. I invite them to consider that they never need to do that again.

Relationships are exactly that: a minimum of two. Plural. Never one-sided.

October 8th 2026 Dismissing simple because we are so smothered in complex Dismissing simple because we are so smothered in complex When our days feel like an assault of bad news, conflict, hardship, corrupted leadership and a seriously broken Molochian system, we might forget that some things are very simple. For many things, there are steps and habits that are simple, that when done with disciplined consistency, produce healthy results in the future. The morning routine - the frame that sets...

October 7th 2026 Framing and freedom Framing and freedom A frame is a structure that holds the parts together. It is an enclosing border. To frame a story is to set a context that allows the story to exist within the frame or context. When we seek to frame our lives, we might consider what structure is needed to allow the parts of us to hold together, to be in integrity. The frame might include the daily habits that support us. The values we hold non-negotiable. The relationships that are...

Extract from the downtrodden, the lower ‘castes’, those with limited access to education, those who do not look like those in power, or pray to a similar god. Build the data centres in places already hollowed out by poverty. Places that have lived the neglect of society for decades. Out of sight, out of mind. Plunder from the earth, the enslaved, artists,...
